5 Financial Reports Every Business Owner Should Review
Good financial reporting turns bookkeeping into a management tool. These five reports help owners understand profitability, cash, obligations, and trends.
1. Profit & Loss Statement
Shows revenue, expenses, and profit over a period of time. Review both the current month and year-to-date results, and compare them with prior periods when possible.
2. Balance Sheet
Provides a snapshot of assets, liabilities, and equity. It helps you understand what the business owns, what it owes, and how the financial position is changing.
3. Cash Flow Statement
Profit and cash are not the same thing. Cash-flow reporting helps explain where cash came from and where it went.
4. Accounts Receivable Aging
Shows which customers owe you money and how long balances have been outstanding. Old receivables can create cash-flow problems even when sales are strong.
5. Accounts Payable Aging
Shows what the business owes vendors and when bills are due. It supports cash planning and helps avoid missed obligations.
Make the reports useful
The value comes from reviewing reports consistently, using meaningful categories, comparing periods, and asking questions when something changes unexpectedly.
