Financial Projections for Growth and Expansion
Pro forma financial projections help turn a business idea into measurable assumptions about revenue, costs, cash needs, and profitability.
Start with the operating assumptions
Estimate sales volume, pricing, staffing, payroll, rent, equipment, financing, and other operating costs. The assumptions should be clear enough to update as new information becomes available.
Look at cash—not just profit
A growing business can be profitable on paper and still need additional cash. Projections should consider timing of collections, inventory, capital purchases, debt payments, and startup costs.
Test different scenarios
Consider what happens if revenue develops more slowly, costs are higher, or the project opens later than expected. Scenario analysis helps management prepare before committing resources.
Use projections after the decision
Once a project begins, compare actual results with the original assumptions. The differences can help management adjust quickly and improve future planning.
